DÙTHCHAS

A Men's Gathering

Residential Retreat in North Yorkshire

Little Seed Field, Nidderdale Valley, Yorkshire

Wednesday 1st July - Friday 3rd July 2026

 Back to Your True Nature

What is Dùthchas?

Dùthchas (pronounced DOO-khus) is a Scottish Gaelic term a word we don't have the exact equivalent for in English. But its essence you might love.

It speaks to something deeper than heritage or home. The sense of belonging that comes from knowing your place in the world. Your connection to land, lineage, and purpose. The inherited wisdom carried in your bones. Calling you to be part of something.

In its fullest meaning, Dùthchas encompasses:

  • Belonging  to the land, nature and cause. Wholesome connection.

  • Inherited knowledge  the intuitive wisdom passed through generations, opportunity to learn, grow and carry forward.

  • Reciprocal relationship not just what you receive from land and community, but what you give back, who you are and how you contribute.

  • Natural disposition:  A deepened sense of who you are when stripped of performance and pretence, or the busy carry on of the day-to-day. Values, alignment, presence.

For many men today, this sense of rootedness has become fragmented. You might feel you move through life untethered from landscape, disconnected from heritage, uncertain of your contribution. Dùthchas invites a rootedness, not backward, but inward and forward.  To rediscover what grounds you and what is yours to give.

Creating energy, purpose and enhancing wellness.

The man this retreat is for

Dùthchas will create space for up to six men, to explore, grow and connect in this unique nature experience. For inner growth and outer action.

You've probably done some 'inner work' already or are curious about personal growth and nurturing well-being. You're not looking for quick fixes or surface-level motivation or strategies. Something in you knows there's a deeper alignment available, between who you are and how you're living.

You might recognise yourself in some of these elements:

  • You've achieved things that look successful on paper, yet feel a tension or disconnect from what truly matters within.

  • You sense you're entering (or navigating) a significant life transition (personal or professional or both) and want to move through it with intention rather than reaction

  • You feel pulled toward contributing something meaningful, and understanding yourself and your purpose but need space to clarify what that actually looks like for you, or how to make space for it to emerge.

  • You're drawn to nature as something more than an escape. You feel differently when you are in it, calmer, more attuned and you want to understand why Nature is important to who your choosing to be in life, and how to connect with that more profoundly.

  • You want to slow down without losing momentum; to reflect without becoming stuck and find solutions, and come more comfortable with not always knowing, but trusting your choosing your right path.

  • You're curious about integrating different parts of yourself, the driven and the contemplative, the logical and the intuitive, the past, present and future self.

  • You'd love to feel more confident when emotions feel huge, or thoughts over-whelm. And know this has something to do with choices and alignment. With space to discover more.

  • You value depth in conversation and connection with other inspiring folk who are also interested in exploring growth.

This is not a retreat for men in acute crisis. It's for men who are ready  and have space for reflective, regenerative work in the company of others on a similar - yet equally unique -path.

What We'll Explore Together

This is a retreat for men, ready to ask themselves big questions and look to the natural world to help you with shifts, transitions and clarity in a compassionate and inquisitive way.

No harsh or extreme rituals to prove your manhood, no howling at the moon or beating your chest to exclaim your alpha energy. This leans into the desire for an equitable, balanced and aligned future for us all. Human Centred. Where your well-being is rooted, your sense of self centred, and your mind clear, calm and open to insight to help you in world that is often less than simple.

Maybe that's the man you are? Looking for ways to be more of yourself?

Arriving Wednesday early evening (4pm-6pm) for an gentle welcome (6:30pm), evening meal,  and a restful sleep. You'll spend the next two days with up to five other 'explorers' here alongside JK  (founder & coach of Where the Mind Grows) and skilled collaborators immersed in the woods, delving into activities and workshops and finding our way in the natural setting.

Taking time together in this restorative landscape of Little Seed Field in the Nidderdale valley, Yorkshire. Solo time, facilitated workshops, and nature reconnection, we'll create space for you to:

Deepen your sense of purpose and belonging: Where are you in this current chapter of life? What is seeking to emerge? We'll work with practices that help you access clarity beyond the thinking mind.

Realign life and work with your values: Many men sense a gap between how they're living and what they truly care about. We'll explore what integration looks like—practically and sustainably.

Strengthen your relationship with well-being: Not as another item on the to-do list, but as the foundation everything else rests upon. What does a wholesome life actually mean for you?

Create perspective on choices and decisions: Sometimes we need distance to see clearly. The combination of nature, space, and guided inquiry supports fresh insight.

Clarify what is yours to contribute: Whether you're nurturing something already underway or seeking direction, we'll explore what good you're here to do—and how to move toward it.

How We'll Work Together

Drawing on landscape, heritage,  living systems approaches, emotional intelligence & regulation and creativity, the retreat weaves together:

  • Nature immersion: time in wild spaces, with Nature as a mentor, not just a place to be in.

  • Facilitated inquiry: guided sessions to explore purpose, values, and direction

  • Somatic and creative practices: engaging body and imagination alongside mind

  • Reflective solitude : structured time alone for integration

  • Campfire circle conversation :  Reflection with ease, warmth and a natural space to capture and share ideas.

  • Connection with a small group of men (Maximum six) - an experience that often helps you feel less alone.

We'll make space for both the analytical and intuitive, the active and receptive. Supporting you to access awareness,  and bring different aspects of yourself into alignment. You don't need to be an expert at anything, or feel you need to know all the answers. This space is facilitated to help you guide and explore. Make sense and get curious. Creating intention, action or just the space to be.

Leaving with

  • A calming reset for your nervous system & mind.

  • Clearer understanding of choices and decisions, that may need focus right now.

  • A 'map' to navigate intentions and next steps

  • Values resources to help you stay aligned in life

  • Understanding of a purpose, project or cause you'd like to contribute to or continue developing.

  • A set of intentions and a plan for a wholesome life from here. Managing energy not just time.

  • New connections, within yourself and with others too.

  • A deepened reconnection with the natural world.

Leaving without

You'll also often leave without something, in this space. This may be letting go of stuck feelings, old beliefs or stories. Expectations of yourself, others or the world. Old habits and routines that kept you over busy and disconnected. This is often where the unexpected shifts happen!

" You seemed to know me better than I've known myself in nearly fifty years, I've never felt so understood"
"I'm no longer feeling I need to go straight to people pleasing, saying yes and then feeling angry when I felt so busy and not appreciated. I'm using the techniques we discussed to pause, make sense and choose a good option for me"
“I couldn't have enjoyed the sessions online or in an office, I feel like I spend my whole life on Teams right now! Being out in the woods is what made the difference for me... and finding space for myself to talk about things I haven't found answers to before... I felt a little guilty at first but the sessions helped me realise that was part of the problem & why I had waited so long to find ways to help me"

Common Questions

- Retreat FAQ's

Is this retreat suitable if I'm dealing with mental health challenges or going through a difficult life transition?  The retreat is suitable for men and/or people identifying as male, who have lived experience of mental health or experienced times of change or difficulty. However, our retreats are designed for personal growth and connection and whilst they might be therapeutic in nature, they are not a therapy or crisis space. If you're currently receiving mental health treatment, we encourage you to discuss participation with your healthcare provider first. Where the Mind Grows facilitators are trauma-informed and experiences in creating psychologically safe, supportive environments working with collaborators who have a good experience and insight into working with people from diverse backgrounds.

Its likely if you are joining this retreat you may have experience of anxiety, depression, stress, burn-out, confidence issues,  trauma, grief, neuro-diversity or find yourself over-thinking situations (either currently or in the past) - these are common issues people we work with can relate to. None of our sessions will require you to share these experiences with the group.

Do I need any prior experience with outdoor activities or personal development work? Not at all. Our retreats are designed to welcome men from all backgrounds and experience levels and we put this retreat because we know this isn't the type of event that many men have experienced, so we appreciate this may be your first time at something like this. Whether you're completely new to nature-based activities or personal growth work, or you're looking to deepen existing practices, our facilitators will proactively support you to engage and feel part of what is on offer. It's totally common to feel a bit apprehensive about taking part in new or unknown activities. If you need to talk to us about any concerns or unknown just get in touch and ask.

Whilst we love people to make the most of the retreat offerings its also a space to 'opt in' to activities meaning you get a choice if you need to observe from the side-lines or take some time to rest while you are here instead. You just need to be opened minded, seeking solutions and willing to explore at Dùthchas

I'd love to attend but I can't afford the total amount in one payment ?  We are often able to support payment plans where we can. If you need this, please contact us to discuss it. Our deposit scheme helps split payments. this is available until 29th May 2026 with final payments due on before Wednesday 9th July. Deposits are non refundable and will only be requested on completion and acceptance of the application/Expression of Interest. You also have an early bird offer of £100 off per person before Friday 29th May and  those sharing a cabin together can claim an additional 15% saving for bunking up (for people who know each other only).

How do I get to the venue?

The venue (Little Seed Field) is located in a remote area of North Yorkshire, so its easiest to get to by car.

If travelling by public transport your nearest stations and/or bus station towns are Harrogate, Leeds, Ripon and you may need to get a taxi from these venues.

Sharing cabin retreaters are encouraged to car share where you are able too.

As part of our welcome sequence to retreat attendees we send you detailed directions to the venue to help you plan a smooth journey.  If you are travelling from further away you may consider the option to stay on site the night before, where cabin availability and your budget allows.

I'd love to bring my son or partner along with me to this event as a bonding and personal development experience, what age is this retreat for?  The event is aimed at adults aged 25 and over, we believe this ensures the activities can be engaged in openly and are age appropriate across a group. Typically WTMG work with male clients aged 25- 55ish from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences.

If thinking about coming as a couple we would recommend you explore this with us directly as part of your application. We do offer exclusive sessions for couples, and this might not be the ideal space for you if your focus is on your coupling and not individual aims.

I'm trying to decide if I should come solo or see if a friend, family member or colleague wants to come along with me. But I am not sure what is best?

Many people enjoying coming to our retreats as solo attendees because it offers you space to really focus on yourself and a cabin to yourself too. If you find you are wanting to attend the retreat to work on issues around masking or people pleasing around others and need space to re-define we say GO SOLO.

That said we have also found that many people will choose to share with someone they trust, feel comfortable and open around and that recognise the need for each others independence and space throughout the retreat to connect with other people too. A sharing option (always with someone you know, we don't ask you to share with strangers here) can be great if you and your friends have identified the need for a break from your everyday pressures,  where you already have connections with people where you do activities to enhance your collective well-being (even though lets be honest you might not describe it exactly that way) e.g you go camping, running, hiking together or have been school/uni friends, colleagues, brothers etc.

Sharing cabins and this retreat experience together can help connect bonds of friendship, whilst also meeting other interesting and new people too. Whatever you choose, we will always see you as an individual and you'll be treated that way. Even if you attend in the company of good friends. We ask each person to complete a registration form prior to attending, and we don't share anything you disclose with others in the sharing or wider group.

For 2026 we are also opening a few cabins for people who are happy to share with another retreater, and we'll support you to connect in advance to ensure you are happy with your cabin buddy.

Do you need to like Nature for this event? This event is delivered in and alongside Nature so we would hope that like us you have an appreciation and affinity for Nature, if you plan to attend.

Many people are attracted to this event, because you don't get enough chance to be out and connected with Nature. The retreat gives you the opportunity for that. Our T&C's highlight an expectation that all attendees will respect the natural setting.

Will a men's retreat  be too 'out-there' and 'woowoo' for me?  Retreats for men still aren't that common and retreats in Nature are still seen as something that may just be 'full of hippies' and 'woowoo' or people worry we'll try and get you to join a cult.

Not this one! Our retreats are accessible to a wide range of people.  We combine science and psychological and coaching elements with elements of ecopsychology, nature-inspired modalities and a natural appreciation for our collective natural world. Some of our practitioners training draw on ancient indigenous wisdom or holistic methods, which have existing for a long time across the world and can be fascinating to explore and learn about.  These ideas are delivered in practical and tangible experiences with open exploration of people's differing views and experiences.  Many people find that exploring personal development and growth can also offer you deeper understanding of yourself and the world, which some people may see as spiritual. We always let you find your own words for your learning at our events.

All we ask is that you come with an open mind to the opportunities and learning you will experience. You won't be asked to do anything you really don't feel comfortable to and our sessions offer space for new ways of thinking and doing, that may lead you into 'stretch zone learning'.  The retreat is a place for personal growth and we invite people ready to engage and participate openly - this is a do with approach not a do too, and we see all attendees as contributors and co-creators of the retreat group. experiences

I am currently transitioning to male or now live my life identifying as male will this be a safe space for me?

Our position on this is we hope you feel it will be yes. The event is open to anyone who identifies as male.

If you disclose anything further to us personally this is always done in confidence as we believe people are the owners of their own stories. If you have any questions around this, please do arrange a chat. Our shared toilet and shower facilities are individual cubicles should you value privacy in changing and showering and we also have ensuite cabins too - we mention this as past trans, queer and LGBTQIA+ clients have fed back this was helpful information to know. We ask you to identify your pronouns on registering so we can speak with you in a way that matches who you are.  Our Terms and Conditions include an anti-abuse policy and we seek to offer this space to people who can be respectful to themselves, each other and nature.
